How do I decide which generator to buy?

Buying the right generator can seem like a formidable task, but is just a few easy steps you can effectively decide which generator is right for you.

1 – Identify the tools and appliances you will power from the generator
2 – Determine the required power for each item
3 – Total the required amount of watts required to power the items simultaneously, don’t forget to allow for the motor starting* as this will require more power than at constant running)
4 – Choose a generator that has the rated watts or exceeds this total.

* Motor starting

Motor starting is an important consideration when buying a generator. Keep in mind that induction type motors, like those that run sump pumps, refrigerators and compressors typically require 2 to 3 times their listed running watts to start. There is a chart shown below which shows as a guide line how many watts you will need to start up motors of various sizes and types.

Note : power tools using communicator motors do not require additional start up power

Which Mower is right for me?

Mowing the lawn isn't just a chore, it's a British tradition. Make it a more enjoyable tradition (or at least an easier chore) by selecting the right lawn mower. When choosing a lawnmower there are numerous options to look at. Matching your garden size, budget and your preference in power should be no problem.

Cutting Size
The size of your lawn will determine the cutting width you need in a mower.
Less than half a tennis court - If your lawn is about this size choose a 16”-18”
Less than 1/2 acre — If your lawn is in this range, choose a 20"-22" mower.
1/2 to 3/4 acre — For this size range, choose a 21"-22" mower with higher horsepower.
More than 3/4 acre — If your lawn falls into this group, consider a ride on mower or garden tractor.

Type of Terrain
For hills or sloped gardens, use a self-propelled lawn mower. For rough terrain, a high wheel mower provides easy maneuverability. For mowing around a lot of obstacles, a trolley wheeled mower allows greater maneuverability for faster, easier work.

Push or Self-propelled
Push mowers are a fine choice if you want or need a little exercise while you mow. However, if you have a larger garden (more than 10,000 sq. ft.), rough terrain, health concerns or are worried about being out in the sun (or the rain) too long, you should consider getting a self-propelled lawn mower, which takes a lot of the effort out of mowing.

Lawn Tractors and Ride-on Lawnmowers

If your lawn seems like a bit too much for a lawnmower (or if you're just tired of pushing), it's time to consider a lawn or garden tractor. These machines can make quick and easy work of your lawn chores and many offer uses that go beyond simply cutting the grass.
Lawn tractors and ride on lawnmowers come in many different horsepower's and sizes of cut. Here are a few simple criteria for determining what size tractor you need.

Cutting Width & Engine Size
Make sure you get the right tractor for your lawn size.

1/2 to 1 acre — For a lawn this size, you will need a cutting width of up to 36" and an engine with at least 11hp.

1 to 2 acres — If your lawn falls into this category, a lawn tractor with a 36" or 42" deck and an engine from 14 to 16 HP is necessary.

3 Acres or more — If your lawn is in this extra large grouping, you'll want a garden tractor with a 42"-48" deck and an engine of 18-20 HP.

Ride on lawnmower or Garden Tractor
If you will be using the mower just for cutting grass, a ride on lawnmower is fine. If you will be using the tractor to pull ground engaging attachments, such as a plow, disc harrow or tiller, you will need a garden tractor. A garden tractor has a heavier frame and transmission, larger rear wheels, and is also appropriate for larger mowing jobs.
